White, white with a flush of pink, like an udder left too long without milking. 122
And once again she'd almost spoken to settle Cora Rider's hash, but her eyes had accomplished what her mouth would not. But the hardest test of all wanting so to speak her speak to her godchild.
And did you think your life is yours alone to do with as you please? That I, your folks, your family, and all who care for you bave no say-so in the matter? Whop! 148
The women had finally sat Miss Geula down and exercised their
democratic rights. There were eight votes for "ladies"
and six for "goddesses." Five held out for "sisters" and were lobbying all the

One minute she was arguing with her prayer
partner, Jamahl, whose so-called solutions to the so-called problem always lay
in somebody else's culture: Tai Chi, TM, Reichian therapy, yoga. She argued that
the truth was in one's own people and the key was to be
centered in the best of one's own traditions. She could have gone on all night.

He'd seen them back the women into the frozen food tank, bending their bodies back as if over a sofa arm, over a bedstand. pressing and pleading for a dollar walk-around money, or sixty-nine cents for a pint to share with Shorty on the roof, or fifty for a game of pool with Bumpy, or thirty-five cents to put them into contending with the teenage basketball stars, or a dime or a nickel or a penny for the gumball machine. And by the time y got to the line and the welfare mamas were fishing out the coupons, wom out with all the haggling, the boymen would lean in for the kill, mashing their joints into the women, mashing the women into the shopping carts, the mesh outlined on ass or hips, the purses clutched so härd the vinyl tore. "A dime, woman, a damn dime." And the women, defeated, would dip into the coins and give it up, then look over the items moving along on the belt for the one thing the children might possibly do vvithout. 183

Not on the streets so much, even when they stalked him and anybody else they thought they could put the bite on. They just angered him then. But in the supermarkets the boymen were frightening. Frightening because the women were there, there and losing. And because be was there, there and helpless. 183-4
One, the kidnapping of the two men who possessed the Coca-Cola formula; the ransom to be broadcast world-wide a month before the 1980 Olympics - Russia, France, China and the U.S. must each divest itself of all nuclear arms and space hardware or there'd be no more Coca-Cola produced. 203
