Boganmeldelse

Angelou, Maya, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

Bantam Books  reissue, November 1993 Random House edition 1970

Byen Stamps i Arkansas.

Citater:

"Whatever was given by Black people to other Blacks was most probably needed as desperately by the donor as by the receiver. A fact which made the giving or receiving a rich exchange." p. 49

"She said that I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy." p. 99

"Ridiculous and even ludicrous. But Negro girls in, small Southern towns, whether poverty-stricken or just munching allong on a few of  life's necessities, were given as extensive and irrelevant preparations for adulthood as rich white girls shown in magazines." p. 104

"I find it interesting that the meanest life, the poorest existence, is attributed to God's will, but as human beings become more affluent, as their living standard and style begin to ascend the material scale, God descends the scale of responsibility at a commensurate speed." p. 120-1

"If I'm living a little better now, it's because I treats everybody right." p. 220

At school, in a given situation, we might respond with "That's not unusual." But in the street, meeting the same situation, we easily said, "It be's like that sometimes. p. 225

"' I knew her well enough to know that if I committed almost any crime and told her the truth about it she not only wouldn't disown me but would give me her protection." [om sin mor] p. 275

"My relief melted the fears and they liquidly stole down my face." p. 277
